The GAA Injury Benefit Fund is a Self-funded benefit fund, funded entirely from GAA funds with no outside involvement. In effect it is a benefit fund funded by members for the members.

Please note the Injury Processes in the GAA, Camogie and LGFA are currently independent processes and the details vary from section to section.

Handball, Hurling and Football – Changes to the Process

Since the 1st of June 2025 any injuries have to be registered and managed by the player or a parent\guardian where the player is U18 at the injury date themselves via their Foireann account.   It is no longer done by the Club Secretary.

Claims must still be submitted within 60 days of the injury date, or they won't be considered. When injured, you need to log the injury on your Foireann profile www.foireann.ie (within 60 days of the injury date)

  • On Foireann Navigate to "Profile" menu item
  • Select "Player Actions" tab
  • Enter the injury details under "Create Injury Notification."
  • Complete the FORM and submit

Notification of the claims will be via Foireann and therefore, it’s important that each player has been registered on Foireann for the current year and has an active membership number against their record.

The GAA recommends logging every injury on Foireann, even if you don't think you'll need to make a claim immediately. This ensures you're covered if the injury turns out to be more serious later on.  link to a YouTube video showing how to register the claim.

There is an excess of €100/claim

The player injury scheme supplements other covers such as Private Health Insurance, National Health Insurance, Personal Accident Cover, Employment benefit covers, Income Payment protection covers etc.

LGFA

All claims must be notified within 8 weeks of the injury date, regardless of whether the injury is considered serious or not. This can be done in 2 ways:

  • Preliminary Claim Form – Should be submitted for any claim which is expected to exceed €200, treatment will not be completed within 8 weeks from the injury date or a claim where treatment is being pursued which requires prior approval.
  • Injury Claim Form – Should be submitted for treatment which is completed within 8 weeks of the date of injury, does not require prior approval and is less than €200 in total.
