Great performance by our U16 Footballers in the 3rd round of the Championship.  Athy were the visiting team and they hit the ground running in Moyglare, building up a 6 point lead early in the first half.  However, the Maynooth lads slowly worked their way into the game and an opening point from Matthew Haugh, Euan Guha with a massive two-point effort and an audacious lobbed goal from young Patrick O’Flaherty brought the team’s level. Several other scores were registered and with our number one Oscar Lehtimaki giving a display of solid goal keeping/kicking the half-time score was Maynooth 1.04 Athy 0.08.

The second half was a different story and the Maynooth boys upped their game considerably.  An unbelievable defensive display saw them hold Athy to one point over the 30 minutes (scored from a free in the 59th minute).  Cathal Corcoran was rock solid at 3 with Jack O’Sullivan and Tadhg Curran tigerish beside him.  Noah Howlin controlled matters at 6, James Clarke and Cathal O’Malley providing attacking support on the wings.  Darragh O’Donnell was man of the match in the middle of the park, ably supported by the athletic Conn O’Regan.  Upfront, our Captain Odhran O’Neill, led by example with a controlled display of kick-passing, Sam Chubb ran himself into the ground and both kicked some vital scores.  Max Ward at 14 did what he does best and smashed home two brilliant goals while Oisin Irvine made a late cameo appearance following a great display in training mid-week.  Overall, this was the epitome of a great team performance against an Athy side containing several County U16 and Minor footballers.  Well done lads, keep up the hard work. Maynooth 3.09 Athy 0.09
